What are thermoplastic road markings?

Thermoplastic road markings are, as the name ‘thermoplastic’ suggests, heat-applied line markings, consisting of four key elements, including filler material, binder, pigment, and glass beads.

To prepare the thermoplastic compound before we install your line markings, we use a thermostatically controlled pre-heater, which heats the compound up to around 170-210°C and keeps it in motion until a liquid is formed.

In this liquid state, thermoplastic is quick and easy to install, and quick-drying, providing the substrate, whether it’s tarmac or concrete, has been sufficiently cleared of debris, dust and excessive moisture.

Why use thermoplastic for road markings?

Thermoplastic is one of the most common line marking materials used on public and private roads, car parks, loading bays, playgrounds and sports courts etc, for three key reasons, which include:

  • Thermoplastic is hardwearing: When installed correctly, by a professional line marking company, thermoplastic is one of the hardest wearing road line markings available, and will remain vibrant and effective, even with high levels of traffic.

  • Thermoplastic is quick drying: Once installed, thermoplastic line markings take as little as 5 minutes to set. This quick-drying ability helps to reduce road closure periods, and downtime in commercial settings, such as car parks or public playing courts.

  • Thermoplastic has reflective properties: Due to the addition of tiny glass beads, thermoplastic has a unique reflective quality, a feature particularly useful in dimly-lit areas, and for general road safety.

How we install your thermoplastic road markings

At Newns Markings, we work closely with each client to ensure our thermoplastic line marking installations are carried out with complete professionalism, as quickly, and with as little interruption to your business’s routine as possible.

To achieve these high standards, your thermoplastic road marking installation will usually be carried out in three stages, which include:

  1. A free site survey: This is so that one of our operatives can visit your location, assess the condition of the road, car park, or playground surface, measure up, and answer any questions about your thermoplastic line installation you might have.

  2. The design stage: Depending on the complexity of the thermoplastic line marking project, the design stage will be where our line marking experts will come up with the layout that best suits your location, whether it’s a simple double yellow line layout, curved arrow road marking, a series of graphics or symbols, or pavement markings etc.

  3. The Installation: The installation of your thermoplastic line marking layout will be carried out at a time that suits you, whether that is early morning, afternoon or late evening, and include:

    • A thorough preparation of the location: This will be done using specialist surface clearing equipment, to ensure the area is free from debris and excessive gravel and dust.

    • The line installation: With the area prepared, we’ll carry out your thermoplastic line marking installation as quickly as possible, keeping downtime or road closure periods to a minimum.
